From the face of the mandolin
1st of 3 nights at home court for the Magic. This was the 1st ever Orlando show, though they played next door in Lakeland a few times. I saw a string of shows starting in April '91 but never did make the trek down to Florida - too bad (but we all feel that way now!). This show is known for having the best Rubin and Cherise. Hornsby shares key duties with Welnick. A long second set evens out a slightly short first.
First Set. Jack Straw settles in quickly and then it's all cylinders. Sugaree is likewise brilliant - in places. Jer, for whatever reason, is mostly absent in a Wang Dang that's tight but pitches no adventure. It's a solid, super-tight Row Jimmy, with a nice tempo (even with playback at the right speed). Jer's main solo uses his MIDI. Rubin & Cherise is the best of the four (all were in '91). Apparently Phil or someone wouldn't play it, so it went back to JGB. Too bad - by '92 it may have been a show feature, and Vince could add to it well. The Promised Land leaves 'em happy.
Second Set. The first half has a fine sequence that gets better and better. Crazy Fingers>Playing may not be very exploratory, just a decent jam. Uncle John's gives room to Bruce's accordion, but the payoff is the Playing reprise, the 2nd bread slice. This end of the sequence has the tour's best and most psychedelic jam. Classic Dead, and dig that tranny in. Drums>Space is pretty monotonous for a '91, but the last half of the set is solidly above average. Check Hornsby during Goin' Down The Road.
1st Set: B- 2nd Set: C+
Overall = 3¼ stars
Jack Straw - all cylinders
Rubin & Cherise - best one outside of JGB
Uncle John's Band>Playing in the Band - the latter is a tour top jam
SOURCES: The 137081_sbd_miller is a later iteration but all SBDs are congruous, and all run too fast (there are two original sources). The first set has some distortion and needs -2% pitch correction. The second set has some static, but it's a '91 so there are decent AUDs - especially the Holtz_Naks_115109 which would make a great matrix.
